Ter Stegen was operated on last week for his back problems and since then there has been speculation as to when he can be ready again. Now the doctor who was in charge of the operation has spoken out and there are optimistic tones here.
It was the French doctor Amélie Léglise who operated on Marc-André ter Stegen last week and now she has come up with her expectations for when Barca’s keeper can put on the gloves again.
“It will always depend on the athlete and which sport he plays, but here it will be around two months. There are athletes who are ready after a week, but it depends on many things. When it comes to a football player, in this case a goalkeeper, the movements are different, but our intervention guarantees a shorter absence than with a normal operation” she told Catalan TV3 yesterday.
Léglise is optimistic about Ter Stegen’s chances of making a good comeback. “We started with a binocular examination to reduce the risk of the operation. There is less than a 3% risk of it returning,” she continued.
If the doctor’s prognosis is correct, Ter Stegen could be back in mid-February, when Barca will be in action in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Most speculation had otherwise gone on a three-month hiatus.
