Xavi hung his head somewhat when he met the press after the 2-4 defeat against Girona on Sunday evening. He believed that the match could have gone either way and that Girona won because they were more effective in front of goal.
“It’s a hard blow but that’s our reality. We see a Barca team under construction and then something like this happens. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take two forwards. Today it could have gone either way and we didn’t play a bad game. The same thing happened to us last March, but we won two titles,” he began.
“Today was a very even match and if Barca had won, you would also say it was deserved. I think we finished 31 times, but our mistakes in defense were costly. It’s details” he continued.
“We deserved more, but that’s how football is. When you’re not solid enough in defense, you can receive a hard blow. We didn’t play bad football, but we weren’t solid enough and it costs this big defeat, as it’s difficult to handle, but we have to move on. We are seven points behind Girona and five behind Madrid, but we will fight on” came from Xavi.
“Girona must be praised for what they deliver. They are seven points ahead of us and it is very deserved. They have a good team that has good opportunities,” he continued.
Here’s what Xavi also commented:
The impression of Girona:
“It’s the best team I’ve seen so far. We made mistakes and we have to improve. The other day we kept a clean sheet against Atlético and today we concede four. Today Girona were more efficient than us. That’s football”.
Does the club doubt Xavi’s project?
“I don’t think so. There will be different opinions, but I have spoken to the president and if you analyze the match, other things could have happened. We have a Barca under construction”.
Robert Lewandowski’s match:
“Generally, we lacked solidity in defense and also in our efficiency. Robert could have scored the third goal, but we lacked efficiency”.
