As always, Gündogan was completely honest and unfiltered in his analysis of the team’s problems in the match against Girona, and the German midfielder believed that the team’s defense was the reason why they are now seven points behind Girona.
The German national team captain has previously put himself in the spotlight for his very direct comments about the team’s problems, but after the game against Girona, Gündogan was not shy to point to the defensive, which, according to him, was the reason why they conceded as many as four goals in home ground and lost the match.
“We lost because of our defensive problems. We didn’t defend as a team at all, like we should, and at the same time Girona managed to keep the ball even when we tried to press them,” Gündogan told DAZN television.
“Girona are a really good team and they had the solutions to the difficult situations that we tried to put them in with our pressing game. Even their runs without the ball, both when attacking and defending, were good and you could hear that their communication on the pitch also worked well. It’s no coincidence that they are top of the league at the moment,” concluded 33-year-old Ilkay Gündogan.
You have to go all the way to the fourth-last round of games before Barca get the chance for revenge when Girona host in the league’s 34th round of games.
