Left-back Marcos Alonso has been out with a back injury for the whole month of December, and since the injury has not improved in recent weeks, he has reportedly decided to undergo surgery.
Not much has been seen of Marcos Alonso this season, as the defender has mainly sat on the bench for the first half of the season, and now it seems that it will be even longer before we see the left-back in action again.
Alonso arrived at Barca last season, where he became a regular with playing time, but the rise of Alejandro Balde, as well as the reinforcements of Iñigo Martínez and João Cancelo, have pushed the Spaniard far behind the queue in the battle for playing time. Now a back injury puts the horizon of playing time even further away.
The 32-year-old defender has not shown progress in the rehabilitation of the back injury he sustained at the beginning of December, and now the newspaper Sport says that Alonso, in consultation with Barca’s medical staff, has agreed to go under the knife for fully recover from the pain that is currently keeping him off the training pitch.
The newspaper says that the decision is expected to be announced in the coming days and that Alonso will then be out of Xavi’s disposal for at least a month. Then comes the rehabilitation, which means that it is uncertain whether we’ll even see Alonso in the blaugrana again, as his contract expires in the summer, and there is no immediate indication that the sporting management has an extension ready.
