Barca has had problems with the economy for a few years now, but a strong and hard effort has made it brighter. However, the club reportedly risks an exclusion from the Champions League due to the mess in the economy.
In September, Barca presented a good account with a profit of 304 million euros. It was, among other things, based on the sale of marketing and TV rights, which Barca has done on a few occasions over the past few years.
However, UEFA’s set of rules should only be based on sales in relation to the football business, and not the sales that Barca has made with marketing and TV. This means that UEFA’s perspective on Barca’s finances is that there is a mess in the accounts and that the club does not live up to UEFA’s regulations.
According to the German media WELT, there is concrete talk of a possible exclusion of Barca from European club tournaments for up to two or three seasons. The media has spoken to both UEFA and Barca sources, and the punishment could ultimately lead to a really bad punishment for the club.
The case is still somewhat unclear, but other penalties may also come into question if UEFA ends up having to punish Barca in one way or another.
Speculation is already rife that UEFA’s suspension considerations are effectively a punishment for Barca’s struggle to mount a European Super League. The other day, the European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA may not threaten or punish the clubs for wanting to make its own tournament, so UEFA now looks like it might use other methods.
